Mariel Roberts performing binary/momentary iii
binary/momentary iii was commissioned by cellist Mariel Roberts and was composed in close collaboration with the performer during the summer of 2018. Mariel requested a piece with the interactive language of my improvised music, but one that she could play as part of her solo touring repertoire. The result is an electronic part constructed of my own improvisations on analog synthesizer combined with an acoustic score that has a somewhat open notation system. During its performance, Mariel sits on one side of the stage and a single speaker sits on the other, resulting in a perceived confrontational duo rather than a fused whole. In the final movement, however, the cellist and electronics do fuse together in a microtonal drone music, combining two major 3rds found in 6th octave of the partials of a single fundamental.
